Overview & Instructions
The CAEE Space & Technology News Alerts application allows you to select and track RSS news feeds from a variety of space and technology related news sources, as well as any other news RSS-formatted feed sources you wish to add. These news feeds appear in panes and update automatically in your browser, bringing you a constant stream of current headlines.
The news alert application displays six feeds by default, but you can alter the page to display any number of RSS feeds you like. The easiest way to add a new feed is to open the Add Content pane (by clicking the Add Content link at the top left of the screen) and select a feed from the provided list.
You can also add your own feed by entering the following data into the Add Content form:
- RSS url: The complete URL of the RSS feed file you wish to add.
- Number of items: The maximum number of items viewable in the feed pane.
- Refresh every XX minutes: The amount of time (in minutes) to wait before checking the feed for new headlines.
When you're done, simply click the Create button and the feed will be added to the top left position on the page. Similarly, if you select an existing feed from the list, the new feed pane will be added at the top left.
Interested in a specific topic? Create a custom feed by entering your own keywords or a question. The news alert application will then search through all of the current articles in all of the available feeds in the provided list to find articles that match your keywords. A new feed with the matching articles is then added in the top left corner. The best part is, you don't have to re-run the search. Your custom feed will perform the search every two hours automatically.
You can also give your custom feed a title, or leave the title space blank and your new feed will be named using the keywords you provided.
The feed panes can be rearranged on the page any way you like. Just click and hold the blue bar at the top of the pane and drag it to a new position. A red outline will appear to show you available spots to drop your feed pane.
Once you have added a new feed pane, you can edit the settings by moving your mouse over the blue feed pane menu and clicking the Edit link. The edit menu for that pane will open to reveal the same settings as the Add Content pane.
To change settings for a feed pane, simply change the desired settings and click the Save button. Then click the Close Edit link at the top of the pane to close the Edit menu.
Each feed can also be manually refreshed by clicking the icon in the blue pane menu bar.
To delete a feed pane, simply click the icon in the blue pane menu bar.
The headlines displayed in the feed panes are color coded according to date. All headlines colored red are published as of the current date. All headlines from previous dates are colored black and display the dates on which they were published.
